Border Community Alliance Selects New Leader
At its January meeting, the Board of Directors of the Border Community Alliance selected Jerry P. Haas as its new Executive Director. Haas has been active with BCA for the last two years, serving most recently as Co-chair of the Board, a position he will continue along with his new responsibilities. Jerry succeeds Bob Phillips, who continues with BCA in a consultant capacity.
Haas brings forty years of experience working with non-profit organizations to this volunteer position. He sees his strengths as visioning, administration and team building. At a house meeting in Tubac following his selection, Jerry summarized BCA’s mission as “bridging the border” by giving people a better understanding of life on the other side of the wall and along the border. BCA has built a strong relationship with Mexican leaders through its association with FESAC (Fundación Del Empresariado Sonorense), a non-governmental organization similar to a community foundation. For the last six years BCA and FESAC have cooperated in offering Cross Border Tours, daylong eye-opening excursions into Nogales, Sonora that have had a high impact on the six hundred plus people who have participated. “We change people’s perception of Mexico and deeply respect the incredible work being done there by amazing people like Alma Cota de Yanez, FESAC’s Nogales Director.”
Besides the Cross Border Tours, BCA has also offered a highly-regarded internship program, started by Peg Bowden and now run by her and Diane Brooks. Here students are offered an in-depth opportunity to learn the complexities and richness of the border region, its culture and politics. Applications are now being accepted for this coming summer.
A delightful outgrowth from last summer is the emergence of a unique program for border kids, the Border Youth Tennis Exchange. You can read more about BYTE and the summer intern program on our website, Border Community Alliance
